Back in 1954 it was discovered that Leonardo da Vinci completed not one, but two of his most famous works, the Mona Lisa. It is common knowledge that ole Leo was a renaissance man to the extreme, a master painter, sculptor, writer, engineer, inventor, scientist, and botanist. A less well-known fact is that he was also an avid oboist. The painting featured here was actually the original Mona Lisa, playing the oboe that da Vinci himself invented. Observed carefully, the oboe pictured resembles the modern instrument developed in the 20th century. Leonardo was truly ahead of his time!
The more famous version of the painting surprisingly does not include the oboe. Davinci decided to delete the instrument due to it consistently being mistaken for a clarinet.
