This small piece of foam allows oboists of all ages to get a better grasp of the oboe reed when inserting or removing the reed from the reed well. Helps to reduce accidental slippage of the finger off the cork which can lead to broken oboe reeds. Simply put the oboe reed remover on the cork of the oboe staple and grasp the foam between thumb and fore finger then remove the oboe reed as you normally would. Very simple, effective and affordable tool in reducing the possibility of a broken oboe reed.
I have my students keep these small oboe reed removal tools in their case at all time. They can be a life saver for student when a reed gets stuck in the instrument.
When an oboe reed is very difficult to insert into the oboe, it will be even more difficult to remove. Students should never force an oboe reed into the oboe. Cork can be filed down with any standard nail file to reduce the size and allow easier insertion and removal. These oboe reed grippers will help with normal insertion and removal, but some new oboe staples will be hard to remove even with the reed gripper.
