Profiled cane oboe cane
Oboe cane profiled on a custom setup Pfeifer profiling machine. The center heart thickness is @.50-.51mm.
This profile will not be a finished oboe reed upon tying, but will provide a great starting point for oboists wishing to save time scraping. It will ensure all oboe reeds have consistent heart measurements.
Pfiefer/Mack shape. Cane gouged at .58-.60, 10-10.5mm diameter. Suggested tie on length is 72mm dependant on staples. Tie onto Chiarugi #2 staples at 72mm.
In just a few steps you can have a great oboe reed.
Step 1- Tie the reed on a good-great quality oboe staple. I suggest the tie on length be around 72mm for a great seal. Shorter on thick walled staples and more narrow staples. Allow the oboe reed to dry fully.
Step 2 - Soak the oboe reed and clip the blank open. Thin the tip of the reed until it vibrates freely. Scrape the back of the oboe reed to remove the bark of the cane. Allow the oboe reed to dry. (3-5 minutes)
Step 3- Define the tip of the oboe reed.Thin the corners of the tip to make a “V”. Bring the crow up to “C” by clipping the tip. Allow the oboe reed to dry. (3-5 minutes)
Step 5 - Define the windows of the oboe reed as desired to add depth to the sound. (3-5 minutes)
Step 6 - Play and refine the oboe reed as desired/needed
